the Longest Ski Run in the World

Phil ThyenPhil Thyen skiing in ChamonixEarly on I discovered how eating better helped me ski better and win ski races, so I continued my passion with food and performance.

Began skiing at 4 with my family in the Cascade Mountains of the Pacific Northwest, and loved it! After becoming a certified ski coach at 19 I have been coaching ever since in four states and three foreign countries.

While completing my MBA at the University of Denver the steep and deep snow in the Wastach Mountains of Utah taught me turning instincts. Later, I landed high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico where I was the Marketing Guy and the Ski Race Director. Settled in at nearly 9000ft we traveled north annually to Colorado’s biggest ski area for ski racing time trials against a guy on the US Ski Team.

Boomtown Ski Run

Daily stuff included working with a PR firm in Taos, snow reports to the media, advertising campaigns, special events on the hill, photo shoots, and collaborating with the town lodging base. Racing side was setting gates on the mountain, hosting events with University of New Mexico ski team and giving out Race Awards at the popular local restaurant “Texas Reds”.

Expansion of the ski area meant doing a spotted owl impact study on the environment, adding a new run and lift, coming up with the new name for the run “Boom Town”, and having artist James Niehues put it on the map.

Flying down under to the Land of Oz led to more ski area marketing and coaching at Australia’s largest resort. During double seasons in the northern winter I loved coaching Mountain Masters Clinics at the largest resort in America, which led to a gig in the French Alps.
